STORYTIME: Sunday Night Showdown

CHICAGO, IL -- The best part about this week's blog is that my little tag to the left over there that reads Chicago is actually accurate as to where I was for the game I'm about to talk about. Yes, folks, I was up in Chi-town for the weekend and boy, did I have a blast. I want to first thank my best buddy, Shay, for the fun-filled Sunday--we made the most of our one day together, and she gave me the best Christmas surprise EVER. More on that in a second. You see, when we bought these tickets, she told me she'd buy them and I could just pay her back for the ticket. She sent me a picture from the seats we had, and though they were in the 300-level, they weren't bad seats. I was just stoked to be going to a Hawks game at the United Center. She kept telling me that there was this huge surprise for my Christmas present, but she insisted that it wasn't hockey or Blackhawks related, which naturally left me very confused. But, I relented and decided to just be pa...

Work Hard, Play Hard - Blackhawks Convention Recap

CHICAGO, IL -- This past weekend was a total whirlwind, let me tell you. Before I get into my story about the convention, I'll start by explaining how we got here. You all know by now how I got into the Blackhawks and why they mean so much to me. I've always watched the convention footage from my dorm room or from my apartment in North Carolina, but it's definitely not the same as being there in person. Before this, I had never been to any kind of convention before and never experienced what I was lucky enough to experience this past weekend. So, naturally, when the tickets went on sale in the middle of January, it didn't take much convincing for me to buy tickets for the convention this year. A lot has happened in my personal life between January and now, and some of what has happened almost made me miss the convention entirely. But, I cannot stress how happy and thankful I am that I decided to go anyways, no matter the circumstances. I arrived in Chicago la...

How Patrick Kane Really Got Me Into Hockey

CHICAGO, IL -- Since it's the off-season for the Hawks and this kind of post has been floating around Twitter  and the SB Nation blogs lately, I figured I'd give you all a little more insight into the reasons why I love the Blackhawks so much. Instead of just a list, I'll make this a story time with a few little anecdotes--mostly about Patrick Kane. I didn't really know much about hockey until I saw the movie Miracle . I was probably 11 or 12 when I saw it, I guess. Pretty self-explanatory--I loved the movie as a kid, and Herb Brooks' speech is basically committed to memory at this point. It's been a while since I've seen it all the way through, but it gave me a nice little foundation for what hockey was all about. Then came the Olympics in Vancouver. I've always loved watching the Olympics--my mom and I watch them together every time they're on. I'm partial to the W inter games, only because I like more of the events. Anyways, 2010 is ki...

Long Time, No See

CHICAGO, IL -- It's been a while, blog. It's been a while. Sorry I disappeared from this blog entirely. I had a rough summer, dealing with a slew of things that I couldn't exactly control from where I stood, then a rough first semester of my final year of college with a clingy roommate. With that being said, I think it's time we catch up. I've done a lot since I've been gone! First, I went to yet another Hurricanes/Rangers game with my roommate, and since we were able to get there early enough, I got a hat that now hangs proudly with all of my Hawks hats. The Rangers lost, but it was still a fun game, and we made a weekend out of it in late October. I also worked on a project involving my college's club hockey team, which included sitting in on practices and attending games, and of course, interviewing a handful of them. It was a really fulfilling project to do, and I'm definitely going to remember that one for a long time. I finally went t...

An Open Letter to My Hockey Sweater

CHARLOTTE, NC -- This sounds like a weird thing to write . I know. But, after all of the tears and the sweat and the cheers this season, there's one thing that's been through it all with me. My sweater. I got my Jonathan Toews sweater for Christmas this past year, and it was really all I asked for. It was the number one thing on my mind, and I wanted it more than anything else. I really wish my parents got a picture of me opening it, because I don't know that I've ever been so happy to open something in my life. I wore it the next time the Blackhawks played after Christmas, and though they lost, I was happy to at least be a part of it. Then, things got crazy. From December 29th to January 19th, I wore my sweater every single time the boys played. And they won every single one of those games. I took it as my sweater being lucky, and as a naturally very superstitious person, the more they won, the more anxious I was to put my sweater on. The first loss to Tampa B...

Blackhawks Face Another Loss

CHICAGO, IL -- I wasn't going to write anything after the game last night. I turned my TV off after the Blues' 3rd goal, and I threw things. Including my sweater, which I regret a lot. I shouldn't have done that. But, I was so angry. I still am, so therefore, this isn't really a recap of the game at all. It's a story that happened about 20 minutes ago. -- I call my mom every morning, just to touch base (really, I’m just homesick, bored, and avoiding work for the moment). She’s a huge Blackhawks fan, since she lived in Chicago when she was younger and was able to actually go to games. So, when I called her this morning, you know what the first thing she said to me was? You know, it’s just not their year. And, you know what? I can be okay with that. This season has been so good to us, between Kane’s point streak, the 12-game winning streak, the success of the second line, guys stepping up that really needed to (Shaw, Anisimov, Desjardins, Hjalmarsson, etc....
